I don't think to call someone fat or ask them their weight is a good way to make friends.
You may didn't concern about that and think it's funny but did others think it's funny?
And please note that other's weight is none of your business.

It’s a terribly bad habit to do so with adults so I would suggest no age limit. It might seem to be okay with children, but it builds a bad habit that’s hard to break (as are all bad habits), so just don’t start. Personally, if you believe it is impolite to ask someone's weight/age then it is always impolite to ask, however just because something is impolite it doesn't mean it always causes offense. This is why it seemed fine to ask those questions as children/teenagers. It is only acceptable to ask this question to someone who has first asked you and you have answered them honestly.
