It was morning, a school day. I didn’t have anything to wear and the bus was coming soon.
My mom had to get out of bed, iron me a dress, and since I had already ate my cereal, put my bowl away in the sink and finished getting ready for school, there was nothing left for me to do but wait for her to finish ironing my dress. So I stood off to the side, quietly, always fearful of her. My entire childhood - from my earliest memory - was always about survival; always watching, always afraid.
