For pronunciation, I practice American accent. In my point of view, American accent is more worldwide and it is suitable for working as a linguist professional. However, I still practice listening skill by listening to all English accent including; American, British, Australian.

I would say that British accent will never ever win over American accent, in my opinion.
Well, at least it is how I feel inside, and it's my personal preference.
Having been in my preference, American accent really has been inspiring me to practice to be able to speak like the American.
Anyway, I say so because I always have trouble understanding those who speak British accent, both in the flesh I experience in real life, and in series that I watch.
They are just hard to understand and I have to replay their words many times to catch up with their words hahah. Well, the reason might also be because of my own intelligence; I may not be fluent enough to understand them.
However, there are lots of the native speakers claiming that most Thai people should be able to speak and understand British accent better than the American accent because our vowels sound like British's more than American's. I guess I am not one of those Thai hahah.

British or american accent, why? Empty Re: British or american accent, why?

Post by 32Surayuth069 Thu Jan 17, 2019 7:49 pm

Nowadays, there are a lot of versions of English in our world used to communicate with one another. So, some scholars in the field of linguistics try to change the word 'English' which was traditionally an uncountable noun to the countable one to show diversities of the English language. According to this, we can see the phrase 'World Englishes' in these days. As the English language learners, all of us need to learn different ways of speaking English in this present world, not just two main accents - American or British, to be able to understand people from different places around the world more easily.
When it comes to the time that we are required to select which accent we prefer between American and British, the American accent is usually my first choice to be chosen. The reason why I choose the American accent is that it is a lot easier to understand than the British one. In the past, nonetheless, when I first learned how to speak English, I thought that I had to learn English through the British accent. Unfortunately, I failed to understand it since the British accent was too difficult for me! When I came to the level of higher education, my preference was changed to the American accent. Until now, I have been learning English through the American accent when it comes to the time that I need to learn English by myself. Conversely, in the classrooms of mine, there are both of the two main versions of English presented.
As our future career is to be a teacher, I think it is essential that we learn the two main versions of English at the same time so that we can tell the differences between two of them to our future students! And most crucially, there is no need to put too much emphasis on the accents, we just need to get our messages across to our interlocutors to make them understand what we want to convey. By doing that it can be said to be the success of the communication!

I choose British accent because I think it is more challenging to acquire than other accents.
Anyway, it is really hard to sound more like British . Lately, I have been practicing my speaking, remembering how to pronounce like British  for a half of a year. Right now, I think I'm not a hundred percent of using  British accent. I am still a half of American and British accent but that is fine because I will keep going on. Let's see my progression in classroom.

I do love a British accent because I think people who speak with this accent are posh! hahaha. However, I will choose an American accent because I think it is easy to understand when you talk to someone who speaks with this accent. For me, British accent is hard to understand. I am trying to practice to speak with this accent, though. But as I said, it's quite hard and I think I want to give up so soon lol

Actually, I prefer American accent to another one. Since I am inspired to learn English by those actors, actresses and singers who are from the USA, I really fall for American accent. Personally, this kind of accent is way easier to catch the word when it is spoken. I find British accent interesting but a bit hard to speak out. However, I sometimes mix up these two accents despite the fact that I’m really into the American one. Well, I’ll try to practice speaking British accent as well in order that I can make a good conversation with those from the UK.

British is my answer. I do love the way the British speak. It sounds... what is it called? Maybe posh. It is harder to imitate this accent. I have watched many British movies and series to catch up how they pronounce words, but I still couldn't speak or pronounce like that. Another reason is that not many people in our society or Thailand can speak in a British accent. So, it is very challenging for me to try and have more practices.

Actually, I prefer British accent because of harry potter. Nevertheless, American accent would be better for teaching Thai students.
They feel familiar with this style of accent and it is easy for them to pronounce. So, I should speak in American accent for teaching.

To be honest, I think British accent looks more posh than American but it doesn't mean that American accent is bad. American accent is easy to understand for the foreigner so it is a charm of American accent! Anyway, I cannot speak in both accent so my favorite accent is Thai. Lol

To be honest, I prefer British accent.
Having a native accent is the ultimate goal for most people, who set out to learn a new language to achieve an almost native fluency. Some people attempt to imitate the way to speak like a native speaker. In my opinion, it is a very good idea but not necessary to change your own accent. I think it is unnatural because each individual is a unique and special accent. That is a feature which identifies us and sets us apart from others.

To be honest, I don't like both of them. I mean I don't want to choose both of them.
I think there are many accents in the world that people use to communicate in the same language.
Without British or American accents, people still communicate and understand English.
In the past, I think I was used to American accent but when I study in higher education, I study with American professor but I can't not understand what he says. LOL
I prefer to listen speak English in their own accent, it's very interesting.

I prefer American accent! I love how fancy they are. In my opinion, i think american accent easy to talk more than british accent. Moreover i lile to cluster the word too. It’s so fun to talk with letter R or L though. However i think british accent is posh too. I like whoever talk in this accent! Love it! But still use and like American though.

I prefer British to American English. It's about the culture and the beauty of pronunciation. Many people comment that choosing accents or pretending is useless and absurd. I consider it rather important. It's about tastes and styles.
